During School Lunch week, Salem Elementary students were able to share the goodness of school lunch with their families! Thank you for all those who came, and especially thanks to our lunch ladies who work very hard to prepare lunch for our students each and every day!
Last week was Red Ribbon week at Salem Elementary! Red Ribbon Week is a week long effort in which everyone at school shows their support of being drug free by wearing a red ribbon.
Salem Elementary’s PTA planned several activities throughout the week to help students learn the importance of living a drug free life. Some of the activities that students participated in were: Red Day, Spirit Day, a classroom banner contest, an assembly with drug dogs, and a day where the city of Salem provided an ambulance, police car and fire truck for students to see on their playground.
Do you have books that are sitting on your shelf collecting dust? Every month Salem Elementary does a book exchange. Students are encouraged to bring a book from home that they no longer want. In return they can exchange the book for a different book that they have not read or wish to read again. These books are either new or used and it’s a great way to help students discover new books and encourage reading.

On Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Daughters of Utah Pioneer volunteers, Linda Warren, Lorraine Underwood, Myrna Tolley, Helen Selman, and Lori Walker welcomed Salem Elementary second-graders to Heritage Park, located on the north-west end of Salem Pond.
In second-grade, students learn and examine important aspects of their community and how their community has changed over time.
Salem Elementary students were given a real treat. They watched a rabbit being pulled from a hat, colored scarves magically appearing, and incredible juggling tricks, all courtesy of master magician Paul Brewer. Paul and his side kick, Chief, entertained the students during the Kick-off assembly for Ken Garff’s Road-to-Success reading program.
On Tuesday, November 21st, Salem Elementary held an assembly in recognition of their super star students. This year students had an opportunity to enter special projects into a Reflections contest. The Reflections contest gives students a chance to develop skills in the fine arts. A few of the categories that students could enter into were 3D art, photography, and choreography. Salem Elementary recently held their annual Spelling Bee. The Bee included the top 37 4th, 5th, & 6th grade spellers. The Bee was the longest in recent history with an amazing 351 words spelled in all. Winners pictured: 1st Place--Jane Eyre, 2nd Place--Erin Parker, 3rd Place--Kyla Rogers.
Students at Salem Elementary have taken on the challenge of being and doing something more than expected. They have set their sights to become Super Stars. Each student is given the opportunity to complete a set of goals and if accomplished they receive an award for their efforts. The goals include everything from academics, social, and personal growth. Students, parents and teachers work together to help students reach their goals. The students have all year to earn the reward but these students got it done early. The 5th graders at Salem Elementary have learned a new talent. Starting in October the 5th grade students began learning to play a musical instrument called the recorder. They practiced long and hard and learned to play a variety of music. In December the students put on a spectacular concert for parents and other community members. The 5th grade classes also visited classrooms around the school to share their talent with the other students. They did a great job!
Salem Elementary's annual 5th grade historical wax museum took on a new twist this year as security guards (fifty grade teachers Cary Abegg, Bob Stutz, and Chris Vest) donned security uniforms and carrying flashlights announced that dusk had fallen and all the historical figures came to life on the night of November 19th. The students arose to the task with great costuming, backdrops, props and memorizd blurbs and gave the community and patrons of the school exciting biographical accounts of their lives.
