Submitted by dorie.thatcher on Fri, 12/21/2012 - 10:43

All the hard work finally paid off when Mr. Hansen's sixth-graders performed A Christmas Carol.  Students had been working for months to memorize and perfect each of their parts.  There were days when they even sacrificed some of their P.E. time to practice the play.  By the time the big night rolled around, they were well prepared to entertain us all!

On Friday, December 7th, Salem Elementary got a real treat.  Chantilly Lace performed some of our favorite Christmas songs.  Students were enthralled and enjoyed singing along. We all got a good laugh when they asked Mr. Wellburn to join them on stage for a song.  We all had a wonderful time singing in the Christmas season.

Thanksgiving Celebration in Second Grade

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break, Salem Elementary second-graders learned more about the daily life of our Pilgrims and Native Americans.   Students ground corn to use in cornbread, made butter with an old butter churn, and then enjoyed the two together as a tasty treat.  They made bracelets from wool and headbands with feathers.  They sewed pouches and made candles.  Students learned how to weave.  It was a fun filled day with lots of hands on learning, not to mention, a great way to celebrate the upcoming holiday!

Every year it is a tradition for Salem Elementary to hold a Turkey Gobbling contest. There are three categories, strut, gobbler, and combo. The winners and participants of the strut and gobbler received a candy bar while the winners of the combo received a turkey! They are judged by grade level.  We definitely had a great time this year!!

Crazy Sock Day

Last week was Red Ribbon week at Salem Elementary! Red Ribbon Week is a week long effort in which everyone at school shows their support of being drug free by wearing a red ribbon.

Salem Elementary’s PTA planned several activities throughout the week to help students learn the importance of living a drug free life. Some of the activities that students participated in were: Red Day, crazy sock day, sport day, a classroom banner contest, and a day where the city of Salem provided an ambulance, police car and fire truck for students to see on their playground.

Jeff Higginson auctioning off the baskets.

We would like to thank everyone that helped with and supported our Fall Family Carnival.  The classroon basket auction was a huge success, we were able to raise $3,100 to go towards a new marquee for the school.  The PTA appreciates all those that bid generously on the baskets and those that donated items to fill them.  Esplin Eye Center and Sunroc helped sponsor our carnival and Jeff Higginson was kind enough to be our auctioneer for the evening.
