On Tuesday, November 21st, Salem Elementary held an assembly in recognition of their super star students. This year students had an opportunity to enter special projects into a Reflections contest. The Reflections contest gives students a chance to develop skills in the fine arts. A few of the categories that students could enter into were 3D art, photography, and choreography. Over thirty students from Salem Elementary entered into the Reflections contest this year. Salem Elementary recently held their annual Spelling Bee. The Bee included the top 37 4th, 5th, & 6th grade spellers. The Bee was the longest in recent history with an amazing 351 words spelled in all. Winners pictured: 1st Place--Jane Eyre, 2nd Place--Erin Parker, 3rd Place--Kyla Rogers.
Students at Salem Elementary have taken on the challenge of being and doing something more than expected. They have set their sights to become Super Stars. Each student is given the opportunity to complete a set of goals and if accomplished they receive an award for their efforts. The goals include everything from academics, social, and personal growth. Students, parents and teachers work together to help students reach their goals. The students have all year to earn the reward but these students got it done early. The 5th graders at Salem Elementary have learned a new talent. Starting in October the 5th grade students began learning to play a musical instrument called the recorder. They practiced long and hard and learned to play a variety of music. In December the students put on a spectacular concert for parents and other community members. The 5th grade classes also visited classrooms around the school to share their talent with the other students. They did a great job!
Salem Elementary's annual 5th grade historical wax museum took on a new twist this year as security guards (fifty grade teachers Cary Abegg, Bob Stutz, and Chris Vest) donned security uniforms and carrying flashlights announced that dusk had fallen and all the historical figures came to life on the night of November 19th. The students arose to the task with great costuming, backdrops, props and memorizd blurbs and gave the community and patrons of the school exciting biographical accounts of their lives.
Red ribbon week is a national wide event that takes place in public schools to promote a drug and alcohol free life style. To celebrate red ribbon week the students and staff at Salem Elementary participated in multiple events throughout the week including, a foot race and fashion show. These events were accompanied by various dress-up days, such as pajama day, sport day, crazy clash day, all red day, and blue day. Halloween got a facelift this year in Miss Anderson's first grade class at Salem Elementary. In an effort to earn a Gold Medal from the Utah Gold Medal Schools Program, treats and sweets have been eliminated from classrooms this year. The Gold Medal Schools Program promotes healthy living through exercise and healthy eating. Instead of sugary treats, students got to make funny faces using fruits like apples, oranges, raisins, kiwi, strawberries, and grapes. The first grade ghosts and ghouls enjoyed and drooled over these healthy, tasty treats. Thank you Mrs.
"Readers are made on the laps of their parents," says Kristy Robertson and Reta Tischner. Kristy and Reta instructed parents of pre-schoolers during Cradled in Literacy sessions at Salem Elementary.
Cradled in Literacy is designed to be an interactive learning model. The program involves parents and caregivers in a variety of learning activities. These activities encourage parents to reflect on their own learning experiences and their role as their child's first teacher. The goal of each workshop is to involve parents as active learners and participants.
